I came across this documentary while surfing YouTube for transitioning hairstyles.

BHDVD Cover printtest“Black women spend billions on black hair care products every year and even though we only make up 10% of the American population,  we purchase 70% of all wigs and extensions purchased in the United States,” the really sad part, aside from the fact that we dislike/hate our natural hair texture so much we spend above and beyond what we have to look different, is that the money we spend on hair care does not stay in the black community.  Before Chris Rock’s “Good Hair,” Aron Ranen, exposed the Korean domination of the black beauty supply industry.  “Good Hair” briefly presented the Korean domination of the black hair industry, but Ranen’s documentary reveals the tactics that are being used by Korean retailers and distributors to ensure that they continue to maintain their strong hold over the industry and drive black owned companies out of business.   To read the interview with Aron Ranen, click here.

As a result of Ranen’s documentary, the Black Owned Beauty Supply Association was created.  For more information, click here.

  1. 1 Nappygurl

I watched the entire documentary and it truly is a shame that black women spend so much money on their hair, the statistics are mind-boggling. Black women, do we hate the way God created us so much that we are willing to sacrifice so much for “good” hair?

I think the most important thing we can do at this stage is educate the younger generation. 1) on the importance od self acceptance (nappy hair and all) 2) the meaning of community. It is a shame that Korean distributors are able to come into our neighborhoods and close down businesses run by our fellow brothers and sisters.

  3. I am inclined to agree with Mademoiselle Mitchell…education prepares us to choose wisely. I just hope enough people see this post or the documentary on youtube so that we are aware of the problem and take steps in correcting it.
